Welcome to Bodycare

Bodycare is a health promotion scheme which targets primary school children. It is run by a trained instructor within schools over a six week period. The lessons last one hour and cover a range of classroom and practical activities.

Aims
  • To increase the level of physical activity of young people
  • To improve the cardio-respiratory fitness levels of young people
  • To increase the awareness of importance of leading a more physically active lifestyle
  • To enable children to take part in after-school activities
  • To promote activate travel to and from school
  • Understand and apply the principles of nutrition
  • Become physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Lead healthier, active lives
Objectives
  • To encourage children to become more active away from school
  • To teach children the effects of exercise and how the body changes during exercise
  • To teach children the benefits of exercise and an active lifestyle
  • To teach children the importance of a balanced diet and energy balance
  • Students will be shown the correct ways to run, jump and skip
  • To be shown ways to communicate, collaborate and compete with each other
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance compare that to formants at the
  • beginning of the programme and demonstrate improvement at the end of the programme

Bodycare is ideally suited for children in years 5 and 6 and fits very well into the National Curriculum, meeting most of the Health-related Exercise (HRE) Learning Outcomes for Key Stage 2. These include:

Every child will receive this amazing work booklet

The Bodycare booklet has a total of 16 pages of work activities, fun games, puzzles, word searches and engaging cartoon characters leaving the children excited to earn all the outcomes of the program.

Over the 6 weeks the children will be set a challenge to collect as many ‘Fit Ticks’ as possible in the hope of achieving a Gold, Silver or Bronze Bodycare Award. Every time they complete 20 minutes of physical activity they will record it in their work-booklets, this will award them with a single ‘Fit Tick’!

The Bodycare Fit Tick Award will encourage the children to take up after school activities, walk to and from school and lead a more active and healthier lifestyle.

Here is what we will cover over the 6 weeks...

WEEK 1 – THEORY

  • Introduction to the scheme – aims / How to earn fit ticks
  • Identify major organs in the body and their roles
  • Find pulse and take resting heart rate – effects of exercise on resting heart rate
  • Warm-up (feel pulse afterwards)
  • Fitness Circuit
  • Find pulse and take heart rate
  • Identify major organs of the body
  • Questions – Effect of warm up / exercise

WEEK 2 – THEORY

  • How to measure chest expansion
  • Identify how the blood travels around the body and transports oxygen and carbon dioxide to different parts of the body
  • Questions in workbooks
  • Word search – in own time (or if finish work quickly)
  • The Heart & Lung Circuit
  • Explain the food record chart and ask children to complete it for Week 3

WEEK 3 – THEORY

  • Using food chart, identify different nutrients / food groups
  • Identify which foods contain which nutrients – Matching Game
  • Identify why we need all the nutrients
  • The meaning of a balanced diet
  • Evaluating food record sheets
  • Questions – Energy balance
  • Balancing your Energy game

WEEK 4 – THEORY

  • What is meant by “lifestyle”
  • Explain how a person’s lifestyle can consist of many things that can be both healthy and unhealthy.
  • Question – the benefits of an active lifestyle
  • Using certain equipment, children will be required to work in groups to design a playground game, with 3 rules
  • Demonstration of games 
  • Write up the details of the game (if time) 

WEEK 5 – PRACTICAL

  • Fitness Circuit
  • Questions – fitness improvements?
  • Crossword – in own time (or if finish questions quickly)
  • “Bodycare Quiz”
  • Collect work booklets

WEEK 6 – PRESENTATION

  • Presentation of ‘fit tick sticker’ certificates and prizes if you decide to give out prizes 
  • Design Bodycare poster
